PROJECT CARE

DESCRIPTION
Childhood is supposed to be a time where children grow strong and gain confidence under the love, supervision, and encouragement of their family. It is a time when children should be free from fear and protected from seeing their loved ones abused or experiencing it themselves.

Unfortunately, for the 10,000 Massachusetts children currently involved in the foster care system due to child maltreatment or neglect, the time that they should spend thriving will be used instead for survival. A child taken into care and fostered often has to deal with the trauma of separation from their family, experiencing grief, fear and anger, even when the
situation they have been removed from was not a beneficial one for them.

This year, 4,000 more children will be removed from their home with little more than a trash bag filled with their belongings, should they have any at all. They will carry this symbol of being discarded from placement to placement, adding to the emotional burden that they already carry.

Though the foster care system is intended to provide temporary, safe living arrangements and therapeutic services for these children, the system is overwhelmed and in crisis; Since 2011, the Massachusetts foster care system has experienced a 20% increase in the number of children removed due to the opioid epidemic. The number of American babies born going
through withdrawal from prescription painkillers and heroin used by their mothers during pregnancy, a condition called Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, increased fivefold between 2000 and 2012. These children are being removed directly from the maternity ward where few volunteers are available to hold them.

This crisis affects all communities. So it is going to take the help of the individuals, businesses and organizational leaders in our community to provide these children with the support they need because these children can either become contributing citizens or broken adults.

Our Vision A world where children in foster care have an opportunity to build a strong foundation in a loving home!
Our Mission It is the mission of Project Care to daily find active and creative solutions to the problems facing displaced children in foster care.
